You can’t buy happiness, but you can buy fabric and that’s pretty close!

Have you always wanted to learn how to sew? Perhaps you’d like to refresh your skills or learn some new techniques? Our beginner sewing course is the perfect place to start! This relaxed, hands-on class is designed for complete beginners, with no previous sewing experience required. You’ll learn the fundamentals of sewing, starting with getting familiar with the sewing machine and understanding the basics of stitching.

Throughout the course, you’ll learn essential sewing skills, including:
• Different types of stitches and seam finishes
• How to insert zips
• How to sew buttonholes
• How to measure, cut and prepare fabric
• Putting your project together from start to finish

Students will begin by completing a project as a class, giving you the opportunity to build confidence and practise your new skills with friendly guidance from our experienced tutor. Once you’ve completed the class project, you’ll be encouraged to start working on a project of your own.

What You’ll Need
Please note that the following items are not included in the course fee and will need to be purchased or supplied by the student:
• Sewing machine*
• Basic sewing kit example: scissors, thread, pins, tape measure, marking chark etc.
• Fabric
*Please ensure you contact us comed@ohs.school.nz before you enrol if you do not have a personal machine as we have a small number which may be available for use.
No previous sewing experience is required. If you’re unsure what sewing machine or supplies you need, our tutor can help guide you during the first session.

Please note: This course will NOT cover pattern making.
