RARANGA FOR BEGINNERS (MAORI WEAVING)

A beginners class teaching you the basic techniques of traditional Maori art form of Mahi Raranga (flax weaving) This covers basic fundamental in Tikanga, history and mahi raranga processes with harakeke. Harvesting harakeke and treatments consisting of hapene, boiling/dyeing to prepare the harakeke for basic awesome projects including putiputi, (flowers) kono (small containers) bracelets, decorations, waikawa (large container) and wall hangings. Five evening classes and 1 x 6 hour workshop to be held within the first Saturday of course commencement.  This will depend on class discussion for attendance suitability and weather permitting. Attendance at the Saturday workshop is compulsory in order to attend further classes.  Class is held in a relaxed and open environment. Please bring a hand towel and scissors for your first class.

 

Please note: All courses need a minimum number to go ahead. If your course does not have enough enrolments, we regret that we will have to cancel and will let you know either by email or text. Courses are usually cancelled, when necessary, 1-2 working days prior to the scheduled start date.
