Kumiko Box Making: An Introduction to Japanese Woodworking
Kumiko is a traditional Japanese woodworking technique that uses precisely cut pieces of wood to create intricate geometric patterns — no nails or glue required.
In this four half-day introductory course, you’ll make a beautiful keepsake box featuring an Asanoha (hemp leaf) Kumiko panel in the lid. You’ll learn to:
Construct a box with mitred corners and a fitted lid
Align the wood grain seamlessly around all four sides
Create Kumiko gridwork and fit the delicate infill pieces that form the pattern
This course is suitable for both absolute beginners and experienced woodworkers — no prior experience is needed.
Materials note: The cost of timber is included in your course fee — you do not need to purchase wood.
What to bring: A small piece of fabric (felt, suede, leather, or patterned paper) to line the base of your box. A scrap approx. 150mm x 150mm is perfect.
