This is a beginners course in machine knitting.
We will cover:
• How a knitting machine works and how to dismantle, restore and maintain one
• The basic knitting techniques: cast on/off, increase/decrease
• Knitting simple garments
• Using a punch card for decorative effect; tuck, slip and fair isle
• Using a knit leader to help design a garment
Who should attend?
Anyone who would like to learn machine knitting, and those that have some experience and would like to learn more.
What to bring:
1. Your knitting machine: Phillipa recommends the Brother 830/836/860/881/891 or similar to begin with, as these are the machines she is familiar with. A ribber is optional but good to have. Best place to buy one is on the Facebook page: NZ Knitting Machine, buy sell swap, parts, patterns, wool etc. Once you have joined the group you can request one of the above machines; expect to pay $0-$200 for a machine and ribber, and you may need to organise a courier. Knitting machines are also available on Trademe; they sell for $100-$300. Check with the seller if the needles are rusty; if they are I would either not proceed with the sale or ask if they are happy to give the machine to you as new needles can cost up to $150. You can also ask on the Facebook group for anything you want including needles.
2. Bring some 2-4-ply yarn to the class if you have some on hand (acrylic is fine). Bring a pen and paper for note-taking and your phone.
